'The Long Hope' film Dave MacLeod

By

This stunning film, which won the people's Choice award at the Kendal Mountain Film Festival in November, documents Dave MacLeod and Andy Turner's epic ascent of 'The Long Hope.' There is a discount available for NLMC club members- so come down to the RGS on February 8th for some inspiration on climbing 1400 feet of loose, bird infested sea-cliff (as if you needed any!)

Tickets can be bought for £9.60, a discount from £13 with booking fee, by emailing Naomi on vice@nlmc.co.uk

More information is available at Dave's website.

New Members’ Meet 2-4th October

By Admin

After the very successful new members meet earlier in the year NLMC has decided to run a second meet at the club hut in Snowdonia over the weekend Friday 2nd to Sunday 4th October. This will have a very similar format to the last one and again we will be offering some instruction for new members using instructors from Plas y Brenin (partly funded by grants from BMC and rest by NLMC). Help from experienced members is also needed and any offers to assist with this weekend would be greatly appreciated.

If you have joined the club within the last 12 months (or just about to join) this weekend is for you. It is a great opportunity to meet other climbers and gain further climbing experience. You will need to provide your own climbing shoes, harness and helmet. Costs will be just the hut fees (£4 per night) and share of petrol costs to get there - remember this is for members only - so join up now if necessary!!!

As orgainsing this does take time - sorting out lift shares and courses please let me know early if you:

  1. Intend to come
  2. Want to participate in some instruction - indicate your experience level
  3. Do you need a lift or can you offer a lift.
  4. Willing to help with less experienced climbers.

Please reply directly to me not to chat@ or news@...

Hope to hear from you soon.

Redesigning the NLMC website

By Admin

The current NLMC website design is about 10 years old and during the next couple of months we are giving it a major overall — not just a facelift but a completely new site effectively.

The committee are very interested in what you would like to see in the new site. We are very fortunate that new member Stephen Tomlinson, who is a professional website designer by trade, has offered to design the new site.

So what do you like/dislike about the current one? What new features would you like to see? Are there any other climbing sites you really like?

Obviously there are two aspects to the site.

  • As a resource for members (online newsletters, news of events etc)
  • As a marketing tool for recruiting new members. The site does really well in Google (stick "london climbing club" in google and see where we come) so that puts us at an advantage to most other London clubs, but what can we do/add to the site to help pull prospective members in. And just to say...we do need new members! For instance most of the existing committee weren't even members 4 years ago and without new blood willing to "serve time" running the club it wouldn't exist.

But it is also really helpful in promoting the barn - interested clubs can see when it is free as well.

So grab a cup of coffee or something stronger and go to a temporary forum that I've set up so the committee can canvas your views. Please be as detailed as you can with your ideas and we'll see what we can do.

Please don't reply to this email! Instead go to a temporary forum that I have set up until the end of March.

September Working Meet

By Admin

As you will have seen from the last NLMC newsletter, we are holding a working meet at the club properties on the 19/20th September. If you have been up to the cottage this summer you will have seen that we (by "we" I mean George Wilson) have been doing quite a lot of landscaping work. However, we need members to help with this, as well as plenty of smaller jobs inside the properties.

All members are very welcome to come along and jobs will be found for all, regardless of DIY skills. As an extra incentive, the committee will lay on free food and (some) beer for everyone attending. I'm also told that there will be localised showers over all UK climbing destinations that weekend so you won't be missing out on any climbing opportunities.

Please let me know if you will be coming along. If you have tools/paintbrushes etc please bring them along as well (I can let people have more idea of jobs that need doing once we have an idea of numbers attending).

NLMC Calendar

By Admin

One of our members, Francesca Robertson, has had the brilliant idea of putting together an NLMC calendar for 2010. She has even volunteered to put it together! The initial plan is to distribute the calendar to members at the end of this year as a .pdf attachment so that it can be printed out.

So this is a request for people to send in photos to go into the calendar. Ideally, we would like photos from the last 12 months which illustrate what club members have been up to in 2009. Photos could be from Alps trips, sea cliffs, exploratory trad climbing, DWS, ice climbing, bouldering etc etc. Basically anything that will act as inspiration when the calendar is sat on someone's desk next year.

Treen BBQ this weekend

By Admin

Don't forget this weekend is the annual Treen BBQ in sunny Cornwall. Wonderful climbing, sunny weather (I hope!), and a beach BBQ. You know it makes sense.

We stay at the southern Treen campsite (rather than the Treen in north Cornwall) near Porthcurno where the Minack theatre is. The best route from London is M4 to Bristol, then M5 South, etc. Drive into the village (a steep sharp left turn off the B road) and drive to the end of the road. Just before the road goes into a car park there is a shop on the left and a farm track on the right. Take the track and drive to where it takes a sharp left by a gate. The campsite is through the gate. We normally camp in the field on the right.

The BBQ is on Saturday night. Most people buy food in Cornwall after climbing on Saturday - the Penzance Tesco is not too far out of the way.

We walk along the coastal path to Porthcurno beach and BBQ there after the beach has emptied (and the lifeguard has left). Sometimes the (fool)hardy go swimming...
